Compact Pneumatic Fatigue/Endurance Testing System
Up till now, fatigue/endurance testing systems were mainly operated by hydraulic power. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing demand for use of small-capacity testing systems in clean environments such as laboratories.
In response to this call, Shimadzu has developed the "Air-Servo" testing system that uses pneumatic force as its driving source. The Air-Servo features excellent waveform reproducibility in spite of its compact capacity and is environmentally-friendly.

- Environmentally-Friendly
The actuator*1 is driven by air-driven servo valves*2 so the surrounding area is not contaminated.
What's more, since air pressure is less than 1 MPa, this testing system is excluded from high-pressure gas protective legislation and applications not need to be submitted as such a system. - Testing Possible in Low Test Force Region
The Air-Servo demonstrates small friction owing to use of pneumatic bearings, which means that excellent waveform reproducibility is achieved in the low test force region that has been considered difficult with hydraulic power. - Precision Control Reproduced
In conventional systems that use pneumatic cylinders, precision control has been difficult by ON/OFF control of solenoid valves. The air servo, however, uses the Air-Servo valve *2 to achieve servo control and enable testing to high precision. - Simple Maintenance
Replacement of operating fluid and disposal of waste oil, such as in hydraulic systems, is not required. - Wide Range of Software Applications Supported
Supports the wide range of software applications provided by Shimadzu for fatigue/endurance testing systems.*1, *2 Patent pending
Principle of Operation of Air Servo
Compressed air from the air supply is fed to the actuator via the servo valve. The test force and displacement, on the other hand, applied on the specimen is detected by respective load cells and displacement gauges, and sent as electrical signals from the controller to the servo valve.
This controls the flowrate of the compressed air to the actuator to generate dynamic test force.
The actuator uses a pneumatic bearing mechanism, which reduces friction and improves control performance.
